Many peasant women claim that Esteban has fathered their children, but he doesn’t believe them. He does, however, believe that Pancha’s son is his, but still refuses to acknowledge any “bastard offspring.” To avoid such drama in the future, Esteban visits a local brothel where he meets a prostitute named Tránsito Soto. She has big dreams and asks Esteban to borrow her 50 pesos to help make them happen. Esteban doesn’t know what she will do with the money, but he is fond of Tránsito, so he gives it to her. The story spans three generations of a family that lives in a country not unlike Chile or Argentina.
Main characters
Though she contemplates the pleasures of “getting even” with her torturers, she finally concludes that any revenge would result in yet another generation of violent abuse, torture, and rape. Having returned to her grandfather’s house, the eponymous house of the title, Alba explores the notebooks of her grandmother Clara and turns to her own writing. At the end of the novel, Alba finds herself pregnant with a child that could be Miguel’s but is just as likely to be the product of the rapes she endured as a prisoner. Blanca (literally, "white") is Clara and Esteban's first-born daughter. She spends her childhood between the Truebas' house in the capital and Tres Marías, where she forms an intense connection with a boy named Pedro Tercero García, the son of Esteban's foreman.

Esteban is finally visited by Clara's spirit, who has come to help the old man on to the next world. Blanca sits outside and ponders her life, looking forward to a future with Pedro and their daughter. She reflects on how she does not want to live her life with anger or hatred—instead, she wishes to move forward and be happy. Esteban is now a senator in the Conservative Party, while Pedro is a leader with the People's Front. Despite Esteban’s success, he is lonely and finds comfort in the arms of Tránsito, who now runs a high-class prostitution establishment.
Rosa del Valle

Similarly, though Blanca’s relationship with Pedro Tercero persists for decades, she imbues and controls it with a sense of caution and restraint. Only Alba seems to love Miguel without reserve, choosing at the end of the novel to remain in a country dominated by a military dictatorship in the hope of eventually gaining a life together with her lover. Clara is a young girl when Barrabás arrives at the del Valle house. Her favorite sister, Rosa the Beautiful, is engaged to Esteban Trueba. Clara is clairvoyant and is able to predict almost every event in her life. While Esteban is off in the mines trying to make his fortune, Rosa is accidentally poisoned in the place of her father, Severo del Valle.
Clara del Valle Trueba
During the period of their engagement, Esteban builds what everyone calls "the big house on the corner," a large mansion in the city where the Trueba family will live for generations. After their wedding, Esteban's sister Férula comes to live with the newlyweds in the big house on the corner. Férula develops a strong dedication to Clara, which fulfills her need to serve others.
Upon arriving at Tres Marías for the first time, Blanca immediately befriends a young boy named Pedro Tercero, who is the son of her father's foreman. Blanca and Pedro grow up together as best friends despite them being of two different social and economic classes. During their teenage years, Blanca and Pedro Tercero eventually become lovers. After an earthquake that destroys part of the hacienda and leaves Esteban injured, the Truebas move permanently to Las Tres Marías. Pedro Tercero meets with Blanca in secret adopting disguises while also spreading his ideas in the form of song to neighboring haciendas.
Though little known to most Americans, the world of Canadian whisky has much to offer the whisky enthusiast. Davin de Kergommeaux’s Canadian Whisky is an excellent place to start learning about Canadian whisky. For a more in-depth view of the best whiskies in Canada, see also the results of the Canadian Whisky Awards, an annual competition founded and managed by Kergommeaux. So, there are two different histories, approaches, and philosophies for whiskies called each rye, one in the US and the other in Canada.
By far, however, the most valuable part of Kergommeaux’s book is his in-depth reviews of Canada’s distilleries and their whiskies. As he points out in the book’s introduction, “Like Canadians themselves, it (Canadian whisky) tends to fly under the radar.” That’s unfortunate because Canada is producing superlative whiskies that are well worth discovering. Although distinct, the history of Canadian whisky is closely intertwined with the history of American whiskey. On Aug. 4, 1892, Lizzie Borden's father Andrew Borden, and stepmother, Abby Borden, were slain inside the 230 Second St. house as a result of multiple hatchet blows to the head what is still an unsolved case.
